I feel so nerdy right now

Me being lame... No hotlinking!

I feel like the most gigantic geek right now =) But I checked my access logs to my portfolio and I have been caned this month by certain people hotlinking to images in it. Grrr.

What irritates me isn’t the fact that people hotlink, but the fact that they don’t ask if they can use the image. I wouldn’t have a problem providing someone with an image that they can use on their website, if they just asked. Wait… should I put a disclaimer with that? Lol. Within reason anyway.

Meh, at least that’s the worst that has ever happened to me in the internet domain =)

But since I haven’t been frequenting message boards and all that lately… what’s the worst that has happened to you?

Ack! Sorry to hear people stealing your bandwidth and images. I’ve had that happen to me too… to the point that it crashed the server! I’d not long put up some concert photos I’d taken and within a couple of days somebody (with a very popular website) had hotlinked to everyone of them and the pure amount of viewings overloaded the server (over a gig of bandwidth taken within just a few days!). I’ve also had somebody steal my website design. I found them out as they were hotlinking to it! I told their hosting supplier and got their website turned off.

If i were you i would write a disclaimer because people seem to stop when there is some kind of reinforcement against them. I hate that they don’t even ask like if they try and do the right thing someones gonna explode at them and tell them off or something. it is very irritating.

That sounds terrible. It’s a good thing that you dealt with it, and I hope that hotlinker does their part and takes down your image. No one should get away with stealing.
Why not try to turn on your anti-hotlinking feature on your CPanel? I think some CPanels have that feature. You might have to do some adjustment with your image URLS on your own blog, but it’s worth it because it adds a greater prevention (though not completely guaranteed) that they will not take your work.

The worst that has happened to me was when I was still in a previous domain. This person took some of my splash page images and made their own wallpaper. I confronted them about it, and they said that I “might have forgotten the time I gave them permission to do it”.. when it was clear that I didn’t. I dunno where that brat is now, if they’re still online or not, or even if they took it down, but I jacked up the protection of my images.

Ooh, another thing that happened was that someone was copying my entries word for word except for changing a few words to ‘cater’ to their location and name. For me, that was just beyond sick.

The worst thing? Lately? My bills. They’re really piling up. :(

I’ve had ppl stealing my layouts in the past, and even my name! Her name was Michelle, and her url was gill-michelle-flowers or something, and she was hotlinking a Killers layout I had made. :(

Hey thanks for visiting and commenting my site. Appreciate it a lot. Ohh that happened at least to each of us once heh.. People just being so selfish without thinking the consequences of doing that. The worst thing happened to mine was a girl stealing a layout from my site. What makes it worst is that she added her site name on the layout thinking its her that produce the layout. How sad eh.. Well things like that happen.

I got an interesting pic that is displayed if someone attempts to hotlink from my sites. I got it all set up via my control panels that if someone does happen to hot link from unapproved site that I already post on, they get that rather pornographic image to deal with.
worst thing to happen to me… some psychotic chick manipulating self pics of mine to make me look bad and then another crazy chick saying lies about me on her site. i made sure to screenshot all of it and post it for all to see, too.

ugh that’s terrible. But it’s also kind of flattering, I’d think, since it means your images were spectacular enough for someone to steal. I haven’t had that problem yet, but I’m nervous that it’s just a matter of time….. oh well.

It’s really annoying when you’ve put hardwork into something and people just steal them away with ease. The internet is becoming more complicated as it used to be.

It sucks that there are still people who don’t know that hotlinking is evil.

On a similar note, the worse thing that happened to me has been mesage board drama when I was younger and a forum taking pics that I shared in another forum without credit the original sources as I did. I know credit is important but I couldn’t help but feeling horrible about requesting

    HOT LINKING SUCKS!

The worst thing that happened to me is, when i made a layout for blog,i forgot to put my credit on it,then few weeks later,it was copyrighted by another person. =( I can’t do anything.huhuhu..

I HATE hotlinkers. I’ve had so much perfectly good cash yanked out of my poor pockets for over-transfer-limit fees, and it’s annoying as hell.

I hope you got the hotlinking sorted out. :S

That’s such a pain in the ass. I hate when people hotlink. Especially really large images. It takes up so much bandwidth.

  14. 15.04.07 - Kenneth - #

I also had people hotlinking images. But other than that, I also had my layout kinda stolen, and a domain name that shouldn’t have been that person’s.
Sigh. People. If they can’t be creative, they seem to steal.
