Some might call it reinventing the wheel

The fact that I hate those plugin photo galleries, and I’m kind of sick of seeing the same thing everywhere, has prompted me to make the decision to write my own Flash dynamic photo gallery. Sigh. The things I decide to do. I’m sure I’ll regret this later, when I realise I should have spent the time studying.

Last night was our work Christmas party – the theme was “beat the rush”, which is why we had it so early. It was fun though, quite a few clients turned up (I would say around 120), quite a few ex-employees (around 8 or 9) and then the rest of us.
Because the doors and lifts to the building and the office are locked after 6pm, we had to stand out in the foyer and let people in (and then buzz them up in the lift). My company being the kind of company it is, decided that all employees would either wear reindeer ears or Santa hats. This caused quite a lot of excitement amongst the other workers in our building who don’t work with us. Lol. Roz and I were standing downstairs at 5.45 and we were getting a hell of a lot of stairs.
Anyway, after the “foyer duties”, back at the party it was going “good”! The bar was well attended to, the catering was really good (as usual, although there wasn’t as much variety this year – maybe our budget was less) and the clients were enjoying themselves. We made them get involved in silly games, such as “bauble throwing” and “the blizzard room”. I think they enjoyed it.
The dramatic moment of the night was when we needed to call an ambulance because one of the clients had suddenly become ill (no, she hadn’t been drinking). She had cramps, and then she started throwing up, and after that she kept on blacking out. She looked terrible, and I hope she’s OK today. What was worse though, was when we learned that the ambulance stretcher did not fit in the lifts. Occupational Health and Safety issue anyone? The poor girl had to walk to the ambulance.
Other than that the rest of the evening was just nice =) I spent a lot of time talking to some ex-employees and some clients. It’s nice catching up with people on a non-work level.
Went home at around 10.30 (got stuck talking to the MD and some of his friends!!) and caught a taxi with a couple of ex-work colleagues. The taxi driver was such an idiot (hands on the wheel please!!) but at least we all got home in one piece.
Because of the late night the entire office only had to work half a day today. That is, we all had the morning off. Because I had to go to a client though, I worked this morning and had the afternoon off. I prefer it that way anyway – I don’t feel like I’ve wasted any time =) So today after I went to my clients, I went shopping (bought some Roxy denim shorts), had my hair cut (layers and thinned at the back) and went to the gym (my legs hurt now). I feel accomplished! Oh, and I also made Burritos. Yummo!
Anyway, better get programming. I hope I actually manage to see this little “project” all the way through. I have so many half finished things… wish me luck!

Wow… that’s a great theme for a party over a month before Christmas.
Good luck with your flash photo piece…

Christmas parties… I love them!
BTW,what happened to the sick client?

I am planning to use the Flickr integration plugin with Wordpress but I decided not to. It’s such a trend nowadays that doing so might make me look like a poser.
Glad you had fun on the Christmas party! Sorry to hear about the client!

Wow, that’s sad about the sick client. Sounds like food poisoning or something else serious.
Wow, you’re really skilled! Programming & drawing these layout images yourself! :)

The party sounds fun, apart from the person having to go to hospital. Hope they are ok!

I believe Flash is similar to PHP but I won’t touch it. It’s not compatible on many platforms and that’s why I stay away.
