Various updates and thanks
Tuesday May 16, 2006

As I sit here, the clouds are moving over the rising run, making the sky look an intense gold and grey. It’s really quite dramatic and beautiful =)

Thanks everyone for your advice on my last post – you all provided me with great advice and support and I really appreciate it. I think that I will take your advice and apply for my original birth certificate.

So thanks to… Ashley, Giselle, Felicia, Justin, Nina, Taryn and Minna.

Unit update
The unit is looking great. The ceilings are now up, which is pretty good considering that the first guy that was going to do them never even turned up. The people who are doing the bathroom are working this week, and on the weekend my dad is coming around to put the light fittings in.

Life update
Not much happening I must admit. Mostly my life is about work and the unit, so it’s not all that exciting to have to read and write about =) I’m trying to exercise more – I’ve even got exercise times in my calendar at work to ensure that I go to the gym. Lol. So fingers crossed that I can stick with it.

Thought provoking question of the day
Something that has been in the papers in the last few days… should the sale of books that promote hate be illegal? What do you think?

oooh exciting, I’m guessing you’re renovating? I’m sure it’ll look lovely when it’s done! :)

Good on you for going to the gym and exercising more!! I seriously need to do that! lol

Yes I think hate books should be legal, consistent with freedom of speech. Two reasons:

    1. Who’s going to deem what is “hate” and what is not? What if it’s satire? How is one to judge and from whose point of view?

    2. If a person is reasonable, hate books, e.g. racist or sexist books, are usually quite over the top. I find anything that’s overtly narrow minded to be lots of fun to read because it’s all so laughable. People who take such views seriously would be influenced if not with books, then any other forms of media. And we can’t start banning things of every form.

    Hate books, tough to decide.
We have the freedom of speech, so people have the right to publish whatever shit they want.
I personally would make it illegal, but that wouldn’t be democratic. And even if it would be illegal, those who are racist/sexist etc. could purchase their illegal copies. Same as with drugs: drugs are illegal, but everyone uses them.
Democracy is not perfect, neither is dictatoty. Not to mention law…
I was thinking much before how to work out a perfect system, but that’s impossible I guess. At least noone succeed so far…

    Books promoting hate!?!!

I wanted to leave advice for you in your last post, but as I was writing it, I realized I wasn’t capable enough to tackle that department. I am glad that you have found a resolution, though! I’m happy for you!

Wow, your unit didn’t have ceilings? What type of ceilings did you install?

Hm.. books that promote hate. I think the true filters should come from publishers first. They should be the one to decide whether or not to publish such material and to decide its appropriateness. If there are publishers that do publish the manuscripts, there is always the second filter: the reader.

The second true filter should be the prerogative of the reader. The book could be sitting on the shelf, but its true circulation is if it enters the reader’s mind. One of the worst things in the human condition is feeling like they’re not being listened to.
I guess, much like the famous ‘hunting’ quote, “If the buying stops, the books of hate will, too.”

i’m glad the unit’s looking good!

i don’t think that hate books should illegal, i think that if they offend that person then they would have sense not to read it.

glad the units coming together nicely. Good on you for getting down to the gym instead of being lazy like me LOL, i cant even start something like that let alone sticking to it.
as for the question- i really dont have any thought on it much…how can we determine what is “hate” but then again who should we let anything like that allowed to be printed…?
