Sick sick sick...
Thursday April 17, 2008

Last weekend it was my Dad’s 60th birthday. We bought him a digital camera, since it’s been something like 7 years since he bought his old one. Lol. We ended up getting him a Canon IXUS 70. Not the newest model out there, but it comes with rave reviews from friends =)

My Dad’s birthday was pretty fun overall. They hiredthe “community hall” (seats around 30) in the complex that they now live at, and we BBQd and ate much food! My sister catered most of it. She made these fantastic salads, duck rice paper rolls and she prepped the meat (chicken skewers, tandoori lamb chops, steak) as well. Mmm… yum. I provided a cheese platter. It doesn’t seem like much in comparison, but I was so dead on the Saturday that I didn’t have any energy to help them out. I think I made up for it though by going and buying the camera.

This week I’m sick though. I feel so rotten. It’s just the flu, but the Cold & Flu tablets that I’m taking just aren’t working, and the only thing that seems to help is boiling myself to death in bed, with the electric blanket on. Sigh.

What makes it worse is that this is a really big week at work. There are two major projects that I’m a part of running at the same time, and they both have these immovable and impossible deadlines. The other developer on the team is getting really stressed out by what she’s doing, and I feel really guilty being sick and not being able to work as hard as normal.

I hope I get better soon…

Anyway, I must be off. The files I’ve been copying off the server at work are finally done and copied (gee… it only took 10 minutes). Take care!!

It's raining, it's pouring...
Wednesday April 9, 2008

It’s raining… When it’s bad weather it actually looks very pretty from the office, which is where I’m writing this from.

I have the most hectic two weeks coming up (at work) and I have to admit that I’m not really looking forward to it. It’s mostly because the other senior developer in the company is going on leave and I’m going to have to take on a good portion of his work. Sigh.

I also have a Cantonese lesson today, and it’s my Dad’s (60th) birthday this weekend.

Busy busy!!

But what has been happening since my last update? Not too much I have to say. My sister came over the other day, at her wits end with her in-laws who are currently living with her. I feel soooo sorry for her. She’s had them living with her since August last year, in a small two bedroom, one bathroom apartment.

I mean, I didn’t mind living with my future in-laws for a year and a bit before we bought our apartment, but that’s because we were in a many room house.

I would say that no matter how close you are to your in-laws, if you are stuck in such close confines, things are going to be difficult.

But anyway =) It was nice to catch up with her, and I think she just appreciated time away from home.

Not so much happening on the wedding front. I’ve started booking appointments with photographers, so hopefully I’ll have more news next week! I’m still dumbstruck by the fact that there are so many crap photographers out there, charging a premium. It takes more than an SLR to make you a good photographer…

And finally not much happening on the home front as well =) It’s starting to get colder, and it was so cute this morning (at 3am) when the cat patted me on the shoulder, “asking” if she could sleep under the covers. Of course I let her =)

Anyway, must go. Sorry if you lost the thread of this post due to it’s many subjects and messed up order!

Take care!

A shocker of a week
Saturday March 15, 2008

Ohmigosh, I had the most shocking week this week at work. It started OK – just busy – but by Friday I was about ready to explode.

We have this client… who has to be the most unlucky client in the world, because anything that can go wrong in a project has gone wrong in his project.

A lot of the problems have had things to do with overloading the development and the quality control teams, and some of the problems have been due to the complex nature of the project, but a lot of the problems I would say have also been due to a lack of project management internally.

But you try telling the upper echelons in the company that.

So myself and another developer got totally hammered by the managing director last week, and we are due for another thrashing in the coming week.

And to top that off, we were at work until 8pm on a Friday night. How much does that suck?

What pisses me off the most though, is that the managers don’t reprimand the people that made the mistake, they just go full out with the blame, misdirect it (in this case it’s me as the Team Lead, and the other guy as the Lead Dev) and in the end the person that made the mistake doesn’t know what they did and you have a larger part of the team bitter about it.

Anyhoo… it’s time to disconnect from work now…

I’m off to study (ironically the subject for today is project team management) and then possibly go for a run (maybe later in the afternoon when it’s not so hot).

Take care!
